LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Stricken singer Brian Harvey is conscious for the first time since suffering life threatening injuries in a horrific car crash.

The ex-East 17 star is now fully awake for the first time since the smash near his home in Walthamstow, east London, on May 30.

Singer Brian Harvey has regained consciousness after being seriously hurt under the wheels of his own car. He "continues to make slow progress" in intensive care, a spokesman for south London's St George's Hospital said.

"He spent all day (Wednesday) smiling and reading through his messages and cards," manager Simon Harrison said. "He was in very good spirits."

The ex-East 17 star remains unable to talk following a throat operation after the 31 May incident.

Chest infection

Police said he appeared to have been reversing down an access road with his car door open in Walthamstow, east London, when he hit another car, was thrown out and crushed.

Press reports said Harvey, 30, had attempted suicide twice that month.

He suffered injuries to his leg, pelvis, abdomen and ribs.

Harvey contracted a chest infection over the past week but that has now been brought under control, his manager said.

Mr Harrison added: "Considering what condition Brian was in two weeks ago, these improvements are great news."
